What is Alibaba?

Alibaba Group was founded in 1999 with just 18 people led by Jack Ma, a former English teacher from Hangzhou, China

It was designed to be a platform for global wholesale trade, with a mission to make it easy to do business anywhere

The internet platform has 40+ different categories including consumer electronics, machinery and apparel

It is active in 190 markets worldwide and is thought to be the world's biggest online commerce company

It operates via thee main sites - Taobao (China's biggest shopping site), Tmall (which specialises in the online sale of branded goods) and pc133 sdram notebook Alibaba.com (connecting Chinese exporters companies around the globe)

The company also has a large stake in China's version of Twitter - Sina Weibo
